The Qualitative Transparency Deliberations: Insights and Implications

In recent years, a variety of efforts have been made in political science to enable, encourage, or require scholars be more open and explicit about the bases their empirical claims and, turn, make those readily evaluable by others. While qualitative long taken an interest making research open, reflexive, systematic, push for overarching transparency norms requirements has provoked serious concern within communities raised fundamental questions meaning, value, costs, intellectual relevance inquiry. this Perspectives Reflection, we crystallize central findings three-year deliberative process—the Qualitative Transparency Deliberations (QTD)—involving hundreds scientists broad discussion these issues. Following overview process key insights that emerged, present summaries QTD Working Groups’ final reports. Drawing on series public, online conversations unfolded at www.qualtd.net , reports unpack transparency’s promise, practicalities, risks, limitations relation different methodologies, forms evidence, contexts. Taken as whole, reports—the full versions which can found Supplementary Materials—offer practical guidance designing implementing research, editors, reviewers, funders seeking develop criteria evaluation are appropriate—as understood relevant communities—to inquiry being assessed.
